Soul Civilian‘s new single “Enough” is the internal monologue of so many people. This indie pop/indie rock track taps into the perpetual feelings of chasing something, nothing, and everything for what seems like forever when it comes to the nuanced theme of love. The lyrics touch on this sense of dissatisfaction but the song carries this more pop-heavy melody that invites the listener to move to the beat.
The lyrics really speak to the pressures of struggling to find contentment when you’re longing for more. The lyrics consistently repeat throughout the song: “Is it ever enough / I just need a little bit of everything / Always chasing new love / I need more, I just want more.” These lyrics seem to be the heart of the track and the probing question sown through the song.
The actual composure of the song also adds to the compelling sound it holds. In true indie pop/rock fashion, the sound has a more upbeat melody with a quick percussion beat guiding the jangly guitar that opposes the nature of the lyrics. While the lyrics are rather intimate in theme, the instrumentation is so inviting and danceable that it makes it very easy to overlook the undertones behind the lyrics. There is also a point in the song that the tempo picks up and allows the vocals in the chorus to shine, which is particularly effective at refocusing the listener.
