Hanson release cover of Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon” ahead of deluxe edition of ‘Underneath’

Date:

GRAMMY Award-nominated, multi-platinum pop-rock trio Hanson have released a cover of folk icon Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon”, one of two new recordings taken from the 20th anniversary deluxe edition of Underneath, their third album, scheduled to be released on Oct. 4, before their Underneath: Experience Tour this fall.

The original Underneath record was released on April 20, 2004 by 3CG Records, the band’s first release on their own independent record label. Recorded in Rocket Carousel Studios during the first few years of the 2000s and co-produced by Greg Wells, it debuted at No. 1 on US Independent Albums (Billboard), and peaked at No. 25 on the US Billboard 200.

Along with seven rare tracks from the original sessions scheduled to be released next month with the special anniversary edition of Underneath, the band previously released the new single “Penny & Me (Moonlight Version)”.

“Nick Drake’s hypnotic music made a deep impression on us while we were writing and recording Underneath,” says Taylor Hanson. “So much so that ‘Pink Moon’ is referenced in the lyrics of our song ‘Penny And Me.’ As we celebrate the Underneath album’s 20th anniversary, we are thrilled to be able to share our rendition of ‘Pink Moon,’ because by sharing music we love we are also sharing a special part of our own musical story.”

Directed by actor/writer/director Natalie Morales, the official music video for “Penny & Me” is available to stream on YouTube. It features the return of Samaire Armstrong, who reprises her role as Penny in the original music video, and Taylor Hanson’s daughter, Penelope Hanson.

“This album is very personal to us,” says Isaac Hanson, “and we are really inspired by the fresh recording of ‘Penny and Me’, which we feel brings even deeper emotional weight to this song about the power of music and connection.”
