After almost 30 years in the music industry, reggaetonero Nicky Jam released his final album Insomnio on Sept. 6 via Sony Music Latin. Throughout the album, he stays true to his classic reggaeton sound while collaborating with fresh artists in the reggaeton genre like SAIKO, Feid, and Ryan Castro

Nicky Jam begins his album with “EMPLEADO” featuring Eladio Carrión, whose deep voice and smooth rapping adds energy over the bass-heavy song. Then, the Latin GRAMMY artist has rapper Luar La L join Insomnio in “LA CYBER.” The song captures a classic reggaeton beat with a chiming melody. Listeners can hear Nicky Jam’s hurt from being in a toxic relationship when he sings “Te extraño, pero no te voy a rogar / A la disco no se viene a llorar /Te trato bien y tú tratándome mal” in the chorus.

Sean Paul and Nicky Jam sound like an unusual pairing at first but once you listen to “CASÁNDOTE,” you’ll realize that the two complement each other well as they sing about finding someone fun that they want to become serious with in this upbeat song. This collaboration shows his ability to create amazing music with anyone. The Columbia-based artist even included a dance song on the album called “BRAND NEW” with Puerto Rican artist Kaeme and EDM producer Benny Benassi.

“INSOMNIO” is a merengue mambo track that makes fans want to get up and dance to Nicky Jam’s beautiful voice. Following “INSOMNIO” is another upbeat song called “CALOR” featuring Beéle. The chill melody makes listeners feel like they’re vibing at the beach to music as the two artists sing about a gorgeous lover.

“EL BAR” has an intense beat with chiming sounds to accompany Nicky Jam’s verses on how he tries to drink the pain of his past relationship away. You can feel the singer’s frustration when he sings “Ahogándome en cualquier bar / Fuiste especial / Te doy restart / Contigo yo perdí mi tiempo.” He continues to sing about this feeling in “QUÉ ME HICISTE.”

Nicky Jam ends his album with “INSOMNIO – Soul Version.” The alternate version is stripped down with echoey vocals that make the sounds of the drum and other instruments stand out. The rawness of this version shifts the focus of “INSOMNIO” from the beat to the message, causing lyrics like “¿Y ahora qué? / Lo nuestro, terminé peor / No te puedo dejar ir /Estás con alguien más” to hit harder. Nicky Jam’s powerful voice is showcased as listeners can hear the emotion that the artist has always infused into his songs, making him one of the best artists in the genre.
