Mina, a Brooklyn-based vocalist and producer, emerges from the creative solitude of the pandemic with her bold new single “Can’t Go Back,” out today. This track serves as the centerpiece of her debut EP, titled Disobey, also out today. A hypnotic blend of electronic production, trip-hop, and downtempo elements, “Can’t Go Back” signals a thrilling evolution of sound, inviting listeners into an ethereal yet cinematic world.
From the first note, the song grips you with its atmospheric tension. EQ’d strings pulse beneath a haunting synth progression, creating a landscape that feels both familiar and alien. There’s a ghostly, almost cinematic quality to Mina’s vocals as they glide through the track, wrapping themselves around the listener like a whispered secret. Her voice, raw and alluring, becomes an instrument in itself, at times teasing, at times commanding—drawing comparisons to the vocal acrobatics of artists like Portishead and Sevdaliza.
In “Can’t Go Back,” Mina’s lyrics challenge the listener to explore new emotional terrain.
Mina shares of the track:
Can’t Go Back is a personal journey, leaving space for individual interpretation. I was reflecting on the bittersweet passage of time, the complexities of experiencing loss, and growing older. I wanted to bring a pop feel coupled with 90s alternative vibe. This created an atmospheric soundscape using a crescendo of my vocals and instrumentation as the song progresses. It’s the perfect close out track for my “Disobey” EP.
The production on the release is as intricate as it is immersive. Every layer of sound feels intentional, from the delicate plucks of strings to the pulsating bass that underpins the track’s momentum. Mina demonstrates her prowess as a producer, weaving multiple melodic moments into a cohesive tapestry. The result is a sound that is rich in texture and depth, echoing the downtempo stylings of 90s acts like Massive Attack and Hooverphonic while maintaining a distinctly modern edge.
Mina’s music feels timeless—like a song plucked from the most intimate moments of a thriller soundtrack. Yet, it is far from predictable. There’s an organic, almost earthy quality to the production that contrasts beautifully with the synthetic elements, keeping the listener suspended between two worlds.
“Can’t Go Back” is more than just a single; it’s an invitation. Mina beckons us to step into her sonic universe, where rebellion and restraint coexist, and where the boundaries of genre blur into something altogether transcendent. This latest release cements Mina as an artist who knows how to craft atmosphere and emotion with impeccable precision, leaving her audience both captivated and craving more.
Alongside the full release of Disobey today, it’s clear that Mina is an artist to watch—one who expertly balances mystery and mastery in every note she delivers.
