Feeling uncertain in the light of attraction can almost pull someone in more. OK Charlie’s new single, “Where Do I Begin,” delves into the uncertainty and second-guessing that can arise when a love interest keeps you on your toes, using minimal yet relatable detail.
The pop-rock song has a tone that derives directly from the Arctic Monkeys. The guitar melody is straight off of AM and the message is equally as needy as “Do I Wanna Know?” The single aids in the band’s debut album’s message about paranoia in the modern dating scene, and as the story continues on, we discover the defensive strategies as the lead singer, Mitchell Hahn, continues to share how he has been thrown off by his heartthrob: “She’s so damn indecisive / Following following down this road again / Just tell me what should I give / Tell me why tell me why I’m always on defence / Thought you’d show up but you hid.”
The quartet from Victoria, British Columbia, is an upcoming indie pop-rock band with lead vocalist and guitarist Mitchell Hahn, Graham Stark on drums, Dustin Braden on the keys and acoustic guitar, and Louis Rudner on bass. OK Charlie is already teasing their upcoming album. The alternative single, along with the rest of the album, come with their own descriptors:
Underground offers wistful escapism / Are You Looking For Trouble stares conflict bold in the face / Coldest Of Monsters is both quirky & scandalous / Nomadic offers an introspective soul-search / Awful is passion in its most haunting form / Savage is the opposite of a love song / Where Do I Begin is the problem the rest of these songs are trying to solve.
The single is slow and steady. With little energy and a consistent pace, we undergo the issue that their storyline portrays as we arrive at the completion of the album. With a touch of post-punk rock revival, “Where Do I Begin” has a pretty understated production, but its familiarity is what will have its audience in a trance.
