After the release of his sophomore album, A Traveler’s Lament, alt-country artist Kyle McKearney went from playing in local bars to performing at major festivals and touring the world. The album, which was released last year, not only won the CCMA for Alternative Country Album of the Year but received 10 other award wins, 25 other award nominations, and became shortlisted for a 2024 GRAMMY Award. Kyle’s music is definitely resonating with fans all around the world, so after completing his first tour in the UK earlier on in the year, he focused on international releases. One of these releases is “Wedding Day,” out today.
With “Wedding Day,” Kyle teams up with writers Lydia Sutherland and Aaron Pollock and producer Vance Powell to leave fans with lyrics that will echo in their heads and music that will tug at the heartstrings. Throughout the track, he unravels a story that deals with love, loss, and hope, as he watches someone he loves end up with someone else. Over the bittersweet string melodies, he describes what it would have been like on their own wedding day, where he would be driving his “daddy’s rusty pickup” and she would be holding a bouquet of daisies. Before long, though, Kyle’s voice becomes full of regret. He knows that this other guy was able to “fix your finger with a rock that shines,” but he can’t “love you with a fire that you can’t put out.” Did Kyle make the right decision in sitting idle? You can listen to it all play out below.
Telling us more about “Wedding Day,” Kyle explains,
“This might be my favorite track from the new record. It’s about sitting idle, watching someone else live your best life. The beat, the fiddle hook, and the story are everything I strive for in a track. It’s gut-wrenching with a glimpse of hope, kinda like life.”
You can listen to “Wedding Day” on platforms like Apple Music, SoundCloud, and Spotify.
