Irish singer-songwriter Hozier has taken the world by storm since his first release, “Take Me To Church.” Through his emotional storytelling, captivating stage presence, and incredible musicianship, Hozier has created a massive fanbase and won public and critical acclaim for his work. His latest EP, Unaired, features three songs originally intended for his 2023 album, Unreal Unearth, but are now given their time in the spotlight.

Opening with “Nobody’s Soldier”, Hozier grapples with the polarity of the modern world. Through driving bass and powerful lyrics, Hozier expresses his disapproval of the suffering around the world. He refuses to let society dictate what he has to do, instead opting to become a voice for those who need it most.

Next, Hozier transitions into “July” which looks towards better times ahead. Featuring steady percussion and light vocals, “July” shares about longing for the freedom that comes with summer. Beginning with a sense of isolation, Hozier compares his feeling of loneliness to the cold, dark winter climate, looking forward to the warmth and brightness of the summer to shine once again.

Closing with “That You Are”, Hozier features Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Bedouine for this softer ballad surrounding devotion towards a partner. Using vulnerable acoustic guitar, sweet vocal harmonies, smooth strings, and shimmering brass, Hozier and Bedouine create a sonic mosaic to sing of their need to be surrounded by love. The chorus sings, “That I’d be / Anywhere that you are, that you are” highlighting their want to always have their partners around no matter the circumstances.

While the songs featured on Unaired never made the final cut on Unreal Unearthed, they still show the immeasurable talents of Hozier. By creating songs that focus on human experiences such as desire, anger, love, and sadness, listeners can easily resonate with these songs and find meaning in them. His authenticity is revealed throughout the album, allowing him to creatively express his inner feelings to the world.
