The award-winning song “Hurtable” by Drew Schueler was released on August 9 ahead of his upcoming EP Vulnerable for Once.
Fittingly, Schueler is vulnerable as he describes the terror and beauty of falling in love. While he is so happy that he finally found a match, he worries about opening himself up. He fears that opening himself up will lead to him being hurt, hence why he now feels hurtable. When he sings “I’m invested / Feel it in my chest when I think about the damage you could do,” you can feel the fear that the relationship can end in heartbreak.
However, he is so in love that he is willing to take the risk. In the chorus, he belts out “You’re breaking me open / It’s beautiful” and later says, “I’m in love and not in fight or flight / This is dangerous but you’re worth the risk.” While love can be scary, he preaches that he shouldn’t let fear stop him from being with someone that he’s in love with.
“Hurtable” won the Nashville Songwriters Association International Song Contest in 2023. On why he thinks his song received the award, Schueler explained that his song is “special.” “I don’t think this song is special because it won, I think it won because it’s special,” Schueler said, “We wrote it from a real place. It’s raw and vulnerable. And now it’s yours.”
His upcoming project proves to be promising with raw lyrics from “Hurtable” and his previous single “This is Where”.
