Melodic Music Monday: August 12

Date:

Every Monday, we bring you a playlist filled with new tracks the Melodic staff has been listening to on repeat. Hear some of our latest obsessions below:

Suki Waterhouse, “Blackout Drunk” – “Blackout Drunk” is a poetic journey through tumultuous love as Waterhouse balances a charmingly upbeat composition with devastating lyrics. Telling the story of an unfaithful, alcoholic lover, Waterhouse seems to express to her partner that their behavior is destroying the relationship and themselves, and despite this fact Waterhouse will never sink down to the same level.

– Justice Petersen

——

Shawn Mendes, “Why Why Why” – The single shows off the singer’s vulnerable side as he opens up about his doubts and insecurities. The song seems to be referencing pivotal moments in his lifetime, including mental health issues that came with the cancellation of the Wonder World Tour, as well as previous relationship struggles: “I stepped off the stage with nothin’ left / All the lights were fuckin’ with my head / But here I am, singin’ songs again”.

– Reagan Denning

——

beabadoobee, “Beaches” – The song follows the trajectory of previous This Is How Tomorrow Moves releases, particularly the early 2000s-inspired “Take A Bite” and the euphoric alt-pop track “Ever Seen”. With “Beaches”, Beabadoobee provides listeners with a calming yet poppy alternative rock track. Using beach imagery and white walls to represent places and states of mind, beabadoobee shows us how she conveys a sense of security in embracing moments and taking a leap of faith by finding the right “Beaches.”

– Clare Gehlich

——

Grizzly Coast, “Washed” The music of Grizzly Coast (Alannah Kavanagh) successfully blends dreamy guitar rock sensibilities with a trademark thoughtful lyricism. Her new song, “Washed,” is a powerful rallying cry against indifference and stagnancy, urging listeners to take control of their lives and reject passivity. Born from a spontaneous and collaborative jam session between Alannah and her husband, Kyle, the track captures the essence of embracing action.
