renforshort embraces independence on “serpentine”

Date:

Lately, it seems like everyone is baffled by how fast the past five years have gone. I can’t go a week without seeing a gif or a meme about 2019 or 2020 being so close yet so far away… If it all seems like a blur to us, then it must be just as fuzzy to renforshort, the rising indie pop artist who is well on her way to becoming everyone’s new best friend. She released a handful of singles in 2019 before dropping her debut EP, teenage angst EP, in 2020. It introduced fans to the hit single “i drive me mad,” which is one of her biggest songs to date. She has continued to release irresistible tracks like “fuck, i luv my friends” and “afterthoughts,” the latter of which was featured in the Disney+ movie CLOUDS. There is no telling what renforshort will accomplish this year, but for now, we can all enjoy her new single, “serpentine.”

Taking inspiration from late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, renforshort delivers a soft and contemplative song about newfound independence with “serpentine.” In the beginning of the track, we join renforshort on a path that serves as the setting for the rest of the song. As we serpentine along this walkway with her, she spills her thoughts. Accompanied by light acoustic strumming, renforshort sings, “I miss you but I kind of don’t” and “It’s not forever / It’s just a temporary fix / Oh, how I needed it / I think about me without you,” ready to make the change. In the end, she claims, “It’s not forever / It’s just a break, that’s what it is.” You can listen below.

About the track, renforshort explains,

“‘serpentine’ is a song that, at its surface, is about walking alone through London. In crafting the melody, we drew inspiration from the style of the legendary Elliott Smith, whose influence is evident in the musical arrangement. Working with Jonny [Lattimer, producer] was a truly enriching experience, as his creativity and talent added so much depth to the song. It’s a special piece for me, reflecting on independence, solitude, and isolation I felt during my month-long stay alone in London. The simplicity and honesty of the song captures such a personal moment, and I’m grateful for the experiences I had while creating this song, with a nod of gratitude to the melodic influence of Elliott Smith.”

You can listen to “serpentine” on platforms like Apple Music, SoundCloud, and Spotify.
