It has been an introspective year for Jonah Kagen, the soothing, folk-infused singer-songwriter who has given us much to analyze with his music. Earlier this year, Jonah released “18,” “The Roads,” and “Pollution,” three nostalgia-soaked singles that ruminate on the ever-changing ways of life. With these songs, we learned more about Jonah’s life, his desires, and his reluctance towards change, as his lyrics took us back and forth between the past and the present. He is gearing up to release The Roads on December 1, a new EP that will tie everything together. Before its release, Jonah is giving us one final tease of the project with “Made Up My Mind,” which features singer-songwriter Lily Meola.
Containing more of a pop sound than we are used to hearing from Jonah, “Made Up My Mind” beautifully blends the distinct musical styles of Jonah and Lily. Throughout the track, we hear Lily’s soulful influence in the lilting melodies, while Jonah’s sound comes through in the acoustic guitar-driven accompaniment. Together, they sing about what it means to truly be devoted to someone. Lily, for instance, gives us lines like, “There’s no happy ever after / After you, I don’t see anything at all,” while Jonah reveals, “Would you find somebody else / If time said it’s my turn to be taken / Would I be your last goodbye / ‘Cause if you asked me to decide / I’d die before I made up my mind.” Pretty heavy stuff… You can check it out below.
Telling us more about “Made Up My Mind,” Jonah explains,
“‘Made Up My Mind’ is one of those songs that felt special from day one. It’s a bit different for me, but I had so much fun experimenting with the sound and working with incredible people like Lily. She really brought the song to life.”
Lily also mentions,
“This song is much darker than anything I’ve done before, but it’s always good to get out of your comfort zone! I really enjoyed working with Jonah, he is talented beyond measure, and I’m just so stoked to be a part of this song!”
