Kid Travis Brings The Summer Vibes With “Buttercup”

Date:

Buttercup” is the newest release by R&B/hip-hop hybrid Kid Travis. While he continues to make a name for himself as one to watch in the music world, Travis has developed a strong presence on YouTube with 484,000 subscribers and has been praised by major artists such as Post Malone, Dominik Fike, and Bryson Tiller. His smooth R&B vocals, reminiscent of T-Pain and Pink Sweat$, are put on full display on “Buttercup,” which combines elements of alt-pop with R&B and trap.

Previous releases such as “Company” and “Fall In Lust” saw Travis explore his musical palette, shifting from piano-driven R&B to straight-up contemporary/radio-geared R&B.

“Buttercup” sees a smooth-talking Travis shooting his shot; “Don’t need a millionaire. Don’t need no lawyer here, just to know you’re fine.” The track sounds like an updated version of “Once In A While,” a catchy 2016 single from indie-pop band Timeflies. The bouncy electro-pop instrumental combined with Travis’ confident yet playful tone makes for a feel-good summer vibe… the kind of song you can’t help but dance to walking down the street on a sunny day; “So what’s up buttercup? Take a little ride with me.” It’s the kind of corny yet endearing humor in a hook that artists have gone for since Tom Jones’ “What’s New Pussycat?” back in 1965.

Travis has been a constant presence on YouTube for years, establishing his channel as a mixture of covers, original material, and a handful of blog-style videos. He covers songs by both males and females across a plethora of genres, including pop, pop-punk, and hip-hop. His performances have improved exponentially over the years, as is reflected in his trajectory of Post Malone covers. His rendition of “Psycho,” featuring Rob Lola on the Ty Dolla $ign parts, was a solid by-the-numbers cover, but a later video called “Evolution Of Post Malone | Kid Travis mashup” drew the attention of Posty himself. “This sounds awesome,” the superstar said in an interview. “He kind of R&B’d it and it was really cool.”
