Laveda shares new shoegaze anthem “Troy Creeps”

Date:

Founded by Ali Genevich and Jake Brooks, Laveda is a New York-based indie dream rock duo with an ethereal and vibrant sound. Nostalgic and introspective, Laveda’s latest single “Troy Creeps” comes in anticipation of the band’s sophomore album A Place You Grew Up In which releases on April 14th via VT/NY-based label PaperCup Music. Produced by Dylan Herman (Beck, Pynkie), the album also features Laveda’s full live band, including Dan Carr (bass) and Joe Taruone (drums).

Troy Creeps” is a textural soundscape of swirling synths and chugging guitar: a shoegaze anthem with lyrical intimacy. The single explores the angst, anxiety, and uncertainty that accompanies coming-of-age. Brooks wrote the demo for the track after just having moved to Troy, NY, where conversations and arguments from the street traveled into the apartment during recording. According to Genevich, the track embodies “a long night spent alone with your thoughts.” Laveda cite Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, and beabadoobee as influences on their grunge tone, a quality they then layer with more glossy, shimmering hues. Evocative of Alvvays and Slow Pulp, Laveda succeeds in weaving deliberate storytelling and powerful vocals with more abstract, hazy instrumentals.

Almost all the songs on A Place You Grew Up In were written on a ranch just outside of Los Angeles, a therapeutic process which gave the songs new meaning amidst the pandemic, struggles with loss, and personal grief. A collection of 12 songs, the album draws from darkness and serves as a capsule of reflection. In addition to “Troy Creeps,” Laveda has also released singles including “Surprise,” “F***,” and “Clean.”
