Cub Sport let go of desire on “Replay”

Date:

In the ten years that they’ve been together, Australian group Cub Sport have evolved from small indie band to ravishing pop act.  Not only have they caught the attention of tastemakers like Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and The FADER, but they have achieved impressive milestones.  For instance, they performed at the AFL Grand Final in 2020, been in the triple j Hottest 100 charts five times, and received an ARIA for their album Like Nirvana, all amounting to incredible streaming numbers in the 250 million range.  Their live shows are also worth noting, which would be nothing without their dynamic pop-meets-electronic music.  Giving us a new hit that you can easily dance to, Cub Sport return with “Replay.”

Smooth but full of energy, “Replay” focuses on moving past the feeling of desire.  Over a driving dance production marked by swells of bass and glittery synth, lead vocalist Tim Nelson gives us expressive vocals that tie the whole experience together.  We hear lines like “I miss it / But I don’t want it back” and “If we stay / It’s just another replay,” implying that sometimes it is best to keep moving forward through situations instead of yearning for more from them.  You can check it out in the video below, which was self-directed and edited by Tim.

Telling us more about “Replay,” Tim shares,

“‘Replay’ is about moving forward.  Feelings aren’t as simple as we sometimes make out – you can long for something and not want it at the same time, you can love something but outgrow it.  I think it’s about shifting from longing for something to feeling free.  But it also doesn’t have to be that deep; it’s a fun pop song, and that’s how I want it to be enjoyed too.”

You can listen to “Replay” on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud.
