Weekly Roundup: April 4

Date:

Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup
playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to. Feel like taking a sonic journey back to the early 2000’s? This week’s playlist is for you.
H
ere are some of the highlights:

1. “Talk” – beabadoobee
Everything about this song is quintessential early 00’s, right down to the music video featuring the band playing on a glass, light-up stage in the middle of a crowded room. For those of us who are a little older, “Talk” has echoes of Liz Phair’s “Why Can’t I?” or Skye Sweetnam’s “Tangled Up In Me,” both of which were huge hits when they were on the radio back in the day. Time will tell if this will be beabadoobee’s big break, but no matter what we’re obsessed with this track.

2. “the glass” – little luna
A song about self-reflection is nothing new, but little luna’s “the glass” manages to shine. Introspective in a way that is both modest and brave, the chorus cuts to the core message without much bravado: “I’ve been facing a side of myself in the glass tonight/ and I realize it’s OK that I look inside.” The words may be simple, but anyone whose ever felt fear of digging deeper can relate to the weight that they hold.

3. “Wolf At The Door” – Antelope
Dinosaur Jr., Pavement, and Braid are just a few of the names that come to mind when we listen to this song. In other words: THIS IS SO GOOD! Comparisons aside, Antelope has created something both familiar and fresh and it’s very fun to listen to. We suggest you give it a try.

4. “What You Wanted” – Amateur Hockey Club
For those of you who dig our alt/rock selections, here’s another song that will be right up your alley. The fuzzy, dark beginning calls back to 90’s grunge ala Nirvana before breaking into a Weezer/Fall Out Boy vibe. Curious what all of that sounds like in one song? Check it out for yourself.
PS- We also love the band name.

5. “In Waves” – AYU
With a subtle, haunting beginning, AYU’s latest track draws the listener in immediately and hits hard with the opening line: “They say that grief comes in waves/ if so, I can tell you today is high tide.” The mellow beat, bass, and electronics carry this track to unexpected places, all the while keep its integrity as a track about not only loss, but hope.
