Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to. From regretting that ex who saw you naked to falling in love for the first time while at community college, here are some of the highlights:
1. “Naked” – FINNEAS
FINNEAS once again proves his songwriting chops with “Naked,” a pop song with a bite. From the beginning the singer takes on the role of a lover scorned, or more like someone who was always bored and disappointed with his ex even before things ended: “if I don’t feel it, I don’t fake it/ and if I’m being real it was overrated/ if I know the deal then I won’t take it/ I can’t believe you’ve seen me naked.” It’s a train of thought that’s all too familiar to anyone who’s ever been vulnerable with someone only to be left with a memory of a person who makes your skin crawl.
2. “Lou Lou” – Luna Blue
Sleek production, a driving drumbeat, and sharp vocals make this one an ear worm that you’re going to want to listen to on repeat. By the time the track hits its bridge– a chant of “sun goes up and I don’t look back/ so what about that?” — we’re out of out seats and breaking out our best (or cheesiest, depending on your POV) dance moves. Turn your volume all the way up and prepare to get down.
3. “Back to Life” – Lost Like Lions
Angels and Airwaves and The Dangerous Summer are the first comparisons that come to mind when listening to the latest track from Lost Like Lions, and we definitely mean that as a good thing! The sonic landscape of this track is big, and it compliments the lyrics perfectly to create a visual of what’s being depicted, particularly the sunrise.
4. “Community College” – Emma Bieniewicz
Emma Bieniewicz paints a highly relatable picture of a freshman finding first love in this poignant track that reminds us of artists such as Phoebe Bridgers and Sydney Sprague. “Never had a heartbreak, feeling kinda lucky walking into my community college/ didn’t mean to stalk you, saw you on the first day and knew you were everything I wanted,” she sings, drawing us in and keeping us guessing: is this a love song or a lament about heartache? Guess you’ll have to listen to find out.
5. “Chapstick” – COIN
COIN’s new record, Uncanny Valley, came out on March 25th and we are hooked. There are plenty of great tracks, but this single still holds up as a favorite. Try being in a bad mood when listening to this, we dare you.
