Animalweapon overcomes self-sabotage on “Deserve”

For the better part of 10 years, indie electronica artist Animalweapon has been dazzling audiences with his bedroom pop songs that are meant to be heard with the ears and heart.  Composing mostly from his laptop, Animalweapon has outdone himself with his work on the Undisclosed podcast, which earned him a Webby Award in 2017 for Best Sound Design/Original Music Score.  He also composed the theme song for iHeartMedia’s The Hidden Djinn and released the critically acclaimed “Summer’s Over,” which resonated with music critics last year.  As this year comes to an end, Animalweapon is treating fans to the lo-fi single “Deserve,” which is from his upcoming album.

Containing ambient synth and kickdrum work, “Deserve” is a calm exploration of mental health.  The vivid layers of sound are an effective backdrop to the lyrics, which feature Animalweapon contemplating his worth.  Poignantly, he asks, “Why do I do it to myself?” and “How much is enough?” touching on the ways that doubt and anxiety can destroy the soul.  You can check it out below.

Telling us more about “Deserve,” Animalweapon explains,

“It’s about coming to terms with the idea of ‘Hey, what if I didn’t self-sabotage all the time?  At what point have I had enough?  What if I just allowed myself to believe that I deserve to be happy?’”

You can listen to “Deserve” on platforms like Apple Music, SoundCloud, and Spotify.
