Royals release deepest single yet with “Jaded”

Date:

More and more artists have been coming forward with new tracks that they recorded last year while in lockdown, and Royals are no exception.  The UK band tapped into dark feelings and intimate thoughts as they dealt with the covid pandemic, grasping the ways that isolation and social distancing affected them.  The end result is “Jaded,” a track that hits harder and dives deeper than the group’s previous releases, but still maintains that classic Royals sound.

Lyrically, the track is based on mental health and the need for things to get back to normal.  Lead vocalist, Luke Smithson, sings in the chorus, “I just want to go back to a time when we felt alive” and “The last six months have taken their toll on me.”  Understandably, being alone and having more time to reflect on the chaos going on around us makes us feel stuck, as if we will never be able to enjoy how things used to be.  The lyrics found throughout the rest of the track are just as powerful, and are sure to connect with the staggering amount of people who have felt the same way during these difficult times.

Musically, “Jaded” is still pop punk, with its strong melodies and unwavering spirit – totally opposite of what the title implies.  The band gets a little experimental, incorporating synth riffs and a sturdy breakdown, but remain true to their signature style.  Fans will notice a tighter, more complete sound with “Jaded,” showing that Royals will never settle when it comes to their vision as a band.  You can check out the music video below.

As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, “Jaded” could not be a better way to kick things off.  The track applies to the mental health struggles we have faced during covid, but its messages can also be a source of inspiration for years to come.  Luke revealed, “Although the main concept of the song was written based on covid, it can be related to with other issues, so will hold its meaning and relatability over time.”

You can listen to “Jaded” on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, as well as on Royals’ upcoming EP, A Spark To Ignite.  The EP comes out June 11, but you can pre-order it here.
