Following his most recent album The Aaron LP, SonReal releases his first new song of 2021 with “Bank On Me,” accompanied with music video. The video reflects on how 2020 seemed a bit lonely and how you can seemingly always count on yourself.
“I wrote this song over Zoom with my producer Trevor Muzzy in my mom’s spare bedroom. I think there’s something about having to be more crafty in COVID times that has made us artists have to dig a bit deeper, and it’s definitely made me push harder creatively,” SonReal tells Complex Canada. “The concept for this video came together over FaceTime with my two best friends, [director] Dane Collison, and [manager] Byron Wilson, and we knew we had something special. We literally couldn’t stop laughing coming up with these scenes. We put months of prep into shooting, and in a place where it rains literally everyday in the winter, Squamish, B.C. gave us two amazing days to shoot in. It’s one of those videos you can’t re-create.”
