Live Review: Charlotte Lawrence and Chloe Lilac Shine at Aisle 5

Date:

Written By: Kiana Lawrence

Towards the end of her headlining set on the Reckless tour, a glowing Charlotte Lawrence turned to the crowd, “Is it anyone’s birthday tonight?” A front row fan waved her arms excitedly. “You? Happy f-cking birthday” the striking beauty replied with a smile, before serenading the fan with “Happy Birthday”.

Moments like these weren’t rare for both Lawrence, and opener Chloe Lilac, who thrived off the buzzing crowd compiled of teens and twenty-somethings. Everyone was glued-in the moment newcomer Chloe Lilac took the stage. The 17-year old singer-songwriter from Brooklyn has a unique bedroom-pop style that is impressively well polished for so early in her career. If it weren’t for her breaks to joke with the crowd, you’d hardly be able to guess her age. Lilac’s sweet and sultry voice shone on tracks like “Stolen Liquor” and dance-inducing “Summer” which closed her set as she left the stage to rising pop star Charlotte Lawrence.

Lawrence walked onto a smoky stage dimly lit by a red hue, sometimes only appearing as a shadow. If there are two words to describe her, they would be effortlessly cool. She somehow managed to pull off a checkered Mario Kart shirt that was no distraction to her incredible talent. Lawrence crooned songs in a sultry tone, bouncing along to the backbeats played by two accompanying band members. The crowd could sing every lyric back to her, and did, especially for up-tempo hits like “Psychopath” and “Just the Same”. When the show slowed you could hear a pin drop, particularly during “Everybody Loves You” which Lawrence sang with raw emotion as she played simple piano keys. During her final song, “Stole Your Car”, the singer played into being a young star of the social media age (with over 500,000 Instagram followers), singing into camera phones and playfully posing for excited fans. If Charlotte Lawrence and Chloe Lilac’s young talent give any indication of the future of music, it is looking bright.
